I started singing practially before I could talk. And, in fact, when people ask me how long I have been singing, I always answer, I came out of the womb hitting a high "C".
I started singing in all the school choirs I could from elementary school through the university beginning private voice lesson in HS on to get my music minor from the university. I have taught music and singing in grades K-12 both in the states and Japan leading my own vocal groups while also teaching private voice lessons and adjudicating vocal competitions.
I always shudder a bit when I have to answer questions of "Sounds like?" I never really can answer that fully. My approach to singing is quite different as compared to the popular reality shows. I really take a song by song approach to my vocals.
And above all else it is very important to find your own voice. I recently spent a month in London England while promoting my new single "Run Away With You". I hear many talented musicians and vocalists busking on the streets and the tube.
My main criticsm is that they all sound the same!
There is no popularity to be had in sounding like Adele, Meagan Trayor or Garth Brooks, except maybe on American Idol or The Voice. Even if you do make it onto one of these shows, because of how these shows are run, your lovely voice will be ruined and you will come out sounding like the judges on these shows, particularly The Voice.
I know one of the loveliest singers who was on the voice and she came out sounding just like they wanted her to sound. Her voice was incredible before this.
The job of a good voice teacher/coach is not only one that can give you solid technique to you won't damage your vocal chords with improper technique but also one that will help you find your authentic voice.
